Abstract: This article examines the calque or loan translation from English into French
language for special purposes. In particular the case of the literal rendition of English noun
phrases, and considers their treatment in French terminology planning. After determining
how these calques are related to loan translations in general, the authors conclude that
they are specific enough to warrant a particular name, the technoscientific calque, which
is defined and exemplified.
