Abstract: The call to freedom which marks the Discours clashes constantly with determinism : if the desire for freedom is natural, so is the chain of causation which deprives us of it. Seeking to conceptualise the break from causal determinism, Nicola Panichi demonstrates that if the Stoic seeds of virtue provide a way of articulating this break, it comes at the cost of a rupture with Stoicism, since according to La Boétie the sage must always resist the order of things.
