Abstract: This work explores the art and the rich modalities of the prologue. The author endeavors to show that this genre, which is quite conventional because of its function as a medium, has culminated in some achievements of admirable originality, from Rabelais to Montaigne, where the margin becomes the site of an inventive gap.
