Abstract: By revealing the plural nature of humanity, Montaigne sets out on a path of mediation as remedy to the troubles of his time. He places his èthos centre stage in order to rethink notions of usefulness and honesty in a reaction to the separation of the moral and political domains. Under the authority of Henri IV, he prepares a return to peace.
