Abstract: Marked by its theatrical beginnings, the novel Mères ennemies is one of the last examples of Romantic polonophilia. Mendès conceived the idea of a work evoking the fate of Poland at the end of the eighteenth century. The tragic dimension of the novel results from the maternal and fratricidal battles which take place in it.
