  • Abstract: Matilde Serao was the first Italian woman writer to be translated into Bulgarian. The essay explores her literary presence, reception and cultural influence in Bulgaria (1880-1918). It aims to identify the original titles of Serao’s printed works, often changed drastically, and the identities of her translators, often disguised under pseudonyms. It includes a discussion of the quantitative data of her reception and of the most common thematic choices for her Bulgarian translations.
