Abstract: In 1893 Matilde Serao travelled to Jerusalem and wrote articles about her journey in a newspaper series, later collected in the volume Nel paese di Gesù (1898), and translated into English in 1905. This chapter analyses the production and subsequent English translation of Serao’s travelogue, traditionally neglected by critics, arguing that it marks a crucial moment in her career at a time when she was seeking renewal in her artistic inspirations and affirmation domestically and abroad.
