Abstract: In Marguerite Duras’ writing, the fait divers serves as a mirror. The author relates to “characters” from the faits divers that she finds in the newspapers: Simone Deschamps, André Berthaud, Nadine d’Orange, Christine Villemin. Meanwhile, this mirror-like effect can also be observed in Moderato cantabile, in which the crime sparks a personal investigation. In the same novel, and as she would later admit to the media, Duras makes further use of the fait divers to reflect her own autobiography.
