Abstract: Drawing upon a corpus of writers, this book studies the way in which the theme of the countryside resurfaced in a wealth of literature from the 1980s onward. Initially taking the form of a melancholic reconstruction of “old times,” it then evolved into an attempt to express the contemporary rural world, in its endurance and the challenges it faces.
