Abstract: The aim of the article is to reflect on how the self’s status and the limits of the right to self-determination developed in Italian early modern intellectual history, in the works by libertine thinkers. It does so by analysing the evolving philosophical, legal, and literary sources of the period on suicide, self-harm, and euthanasia, reading them within the wider European context.
