Abstract: Thinking about epistolary practices under the Ancien Régime in terms of rituals allows us, on one hand, to view them in the light of conventions of civility and on the other, to examine them in relation to the rhetorical methods they adapt, and finally to link them to the codification of the emotions underlying them.
