Abstract: Herriot, the president of the Chamber and designated as the honorary president of the National Assembly, garnered support amongst his colleagues through his patriotic and Republican speeches. Peace and the Republic create unanimity: the Right appreciated the references to France while the Left to freedom and social aspects. Herriot underlined the deputies’ responsibility in the defence of republican democracy faced with internal and external threats and affirmed his attachment to parliamentary government.
