Abstract: Bruno Hildebrand’s work, one of the three founders of the Older Historical School, is largely ignored outside Germany. His famous theory of stages provides a link between the old German cameralist tradition and the future endeavour of the German historical school to arrive at systematic theories of different forms of capitalism and their emergence in pre-capitalist systems (Schmoller, Sombart, Weber).
