Abstract: If Usbek’s absence from his harem indeed appears as the element that sets in motion a narrative dynamic and an ineluctable process of decomposition of the seraglio, it also states the truth of a system whose lines of force it admirably exhibits while undoing the close connections that up to then have been masking its logic.
