Abstract: Everything goes haywire in the Persian Lettres. The increasing anarchy in the seraglio is but the novelistic figure of a tendency toward disorder which affects the political institutions, the global population, and the equilibrium of the planet itself. Usbek’s reason, which finally yields to the violence of his urges, is no exception.
