Abstract: The different kinds of avant-garde cannot be defined by the rejection of heritage, in spite of the proclaimed pretence to rupture : Appolinaire’s « Manifeste de l’anti-tradition futuriste » (1913), an ambiguous voluntarily exaggerated text, is compared with Cendrars’s response, the latter opposing the rewriting of the past to its denegation.
