Dire l’ineffable : l’ascèse discursive de Plotin

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Les Dialectiques de l’ascèse
  • Author: Lavaud (Laurent)
  • Abstract: According to Plotinus, the principle is ineffable, because of its absolute simplicity : there is an immediate contradiction between the unity of the One and the plurality of the discursive thought. However the philosophy has to find the means to say something about the principle. This requires a “discursive asceticism” : the discursive thought has to underline its own incapacity to express what the principle is in itself. The combination of this discipline of logos and of the ascetic control of pathos leads the soul to the contemplation of the first principle.
