Abstract: Throughout his narrative, Rousseau approaches the phenomenon of belief, in both its essence and variety, through his own portrait and that of others, demonstrating the influence they have had on his own beliefs. The religious question is thus put to the use of Rousseau’s apology. In Les Confessions, religion forms a dramatic spur and a philosophical subject, but also a motif firmly interlinked with the autobiographical approach.
