Abstract: The Dictionnaire Oeconomique by N. Chomel (1709-1767), a bestseller in the 18th century and then forgotten, followed a similar path to that of the editions of the Dictionnaire de Trévoux (1704-1771):enriched from one edition to the next, with texte and illustrations, translated into several langages, it is part of European serial lexicography and is part of the pre-encyclopedaedic lanscape. If its title does not correspond to the modern definition of economy, its articles reveal an innovative use of the word economy.
