Abstract: The example has an ambiguous status in the dictionary. It is often intended as an addition to the definition to which it is attached. We will try, in this work, to show the determining role of example in the construction of meaning. After that we will describe the predicative chain links that the example maintain in the lexicographic article. After that we will show the parallelism that the example constitute compared to metalinguistic discourse.
