Abstract: The Encyclopédie Méthodique was conceived by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke after the resounding success of the Dictionnaire raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers by Diderot and D’Alembert. The work reflects the spirit of categorization and world-knowledge that characterized the French Age of Enlightenment. We bear witness to a new organization of scientific and technical knowledge, analyzed via the ancient art of the perfumer and his well-held secrets.
