Abstract: In this attempt to cast an historical gaze on the critical responses to Romanticism in the 20th century, several critical essays published around 1970 share an ambition of going beyond just telling Romanticism’s story, reminding of its main authors and periods and of trying to structure and conceptualize it – in history, and in particular in social history; in a precise historical chronology; and in its essence.
