Abstract: This paper offers a definition of “Romanticism” and “revolutionary Romanticism” which differs from the one in common use among 19th century scholars and whose aim is to highlight a set of cultural phenomena from the 19th as well as the 20th century. The paper then illustrates this hypothesis thanks to a few examples from the past century: surrealism, “situationnisme” and a variant of Marxist literary criticism, most notably represented by Raymond Williams.
