Abstract: For a long time, surrealism concerned itself with exploring “the inner unknown”. Then, in the 1930s, it discovered the need to explore “the outer unknown”. “Nature has happened, one can add nothing to it” [La Nature a eu lieu, on n’y ajoutera pas]. But the surrealists did it—by inventing a link between psychoanalysis and anthropology.
