Deciphering Beckett’s epistolary notes and some private memories that smuggled themselves along, “something outside the head, not life, necessarily”

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Le Style de Samuel Beckett au miroir épistolaire. 1929-1989
  • Author: Gidal (Peter)
  • Abstract: The editors of Samuel Beckett’s letters sometimes made strange choices, removing certain interesting letters, and retaining others of lesser importance. The exchanges with Beckett related here, taking place at crucial moments, can be enlightening. In particular, the letters have a status comparable to the theatrical director’s notebooks, and Beckett wrote them also to communicate an idea, and contest established truths.
