Abstract: This article analyses the way in which Sylvain Maréchal deconsecrated the prophetic biblical episode of the last judgement in Le Jugement dernier des rois (1793) so as to create a sacred centred on the founding human values of a new world. The play, through a spectacular mise en scène, partakes in a revolutionary fervour whose functions it fulfils by connecting its spectators.
