Abstract: Furetière claims to recount “faithfully” the amorous adventures of “good folk of middling status.” The romantic plot lets us realistically describe the language, feelings, and mores of the Parisian bourgeoisie under the reign of Louis XIV while at the same time reflecting on novelistic invention.
