  • Author: Crampe (François)
  • Abstract: Among Victorian authors, Browning is more of a skeptic about magnetism. But the influence of the Renaissance alchemists on Browning's early works gave him a way into Mesmerian thought, read as an explanation of phenomena that, for a poet influenced by his Romantic predecessors, were the prerogative of poetry. This article analyzes the few poems illustrating this competition of magnetism with poetic power.
