Abstract: This book re-investigates the history of the realist current, and the paradoxical place that the fantasist vein occupies within it. This vein is particularly dear to the Goncourts, although they are so attentive to the people and their language elsewhere. With Zola, Naturalism initiates a new practice of literary creation that genetic criticism is continuing to illuminate.
