Abstract: This work first describes the use of different tenses in free indirect speech according to each narrative type (retrospective, simultaneous, prospective). This article then envisages different explanations that could account for the fact that the simple past is the only tense where there can be no enunciator other than the narrator: toncality, decadence, inclusion, openness.
