Abstract: The Triomphe de l’Hiver et du Printemps (1529) is a play written in Lisbon by Gil Vicente for the court of King John III. The work alternates between employing Portuguese, the language of the people, and Spanish, the language of the powerful, and deals with a theme rooted deeply in poetic and folkloric traditions. Gil Vicente plays knowingly with these debates, demonstrating the specific traits (notably diaphasic) of the two languages in use in the bilingual society of this time.
