Abstract: The unfinished novel by Goethe, La Vocation théâtrale de Wilhelm Meister, paints a vivid picture of eighteenth-century German society via the adventures of a bourgeois young man fascinated by theatre, and sheds light on the issues raised by the formation of a national culture of theatre.
