Abstract: What is Villon’s legacy to his readers? The poet gave particular attention and value to his readers’ freedom of interpretation and manipulation of his texts. However, by representing his readers through complex figures, Villon guides our purpose of reading. As Marot did, we try to find out the understanding of the poet. The value of a literary work lies in the meeting of the writer’s intention with the reader’s intention, the sentence “Ung chacun n’est maistre du scien” being actually likely to apply to the former or to the latter. Through the image of “legacy”, what is at stake is the issue of literary property as well as the value of the transmission of a text.
