Abstract:Violence in Comment c’est / How It Is is studied through Beckett’s recycling of studies pertaining to Freudian accounts of sadism and masochism. Nietzsche’s philosophical critique of reason and language offers a counterpoint to the way Beckett transforms a limited rationalising of human psychology into a dark comedy of authorial activity, of relations between the “I” and its narrative subject, of learning and creativity, of memory and recitation, of original and translation.
