Abstract: The question of the relationship between Huysmans and his literary alter ego, Durtal, is not a new one. In this article, however, we look at the attachment between author and character that unfolds over four novels and attempt to understand it through three distinct lenses: novel writing; art in general; and the mystery of Christian faith that is mystical substitution.
