Abstract: This article compares Walter Scott’s and Barbey d’Aurevilly’s relationship with the landscape. It shows how place carries the collective memory of the past. New agricultural practices disappear this spatial memory. Scott and Barbey react to the improvement of the land promoted by their contemporaries. While the former may accept a process that he considers inevitable while denouncing its impact on men, the latter rejects systematic destruction in the name of profit and utility.
