RÉSUMÉS/Abstracts
Christian Chelebourg, « Avant-propos.
Christian Chelebourg, “Foreword. Cultural Heritage and Fictional Renewal”
Celebrating Christmas is part of a fictional tradition. Books, comics, films and cartoons shape the imagination of youth, and their seasonal consumption is a cultural ritual. The media shape a global Christmas that does not prevent local particularisms. In contemporary programming, Christmas is also more and more endangered. It has to be saved. Do not fret however: American television now integrates Christmas into a vast festive period that begins with Halloween and goes through Thanksgiving.
Keywords: rituality, cultural history, youth culture comics, song, movie, television.
Patrizia D’Andrea, “Trilby’s Christmas and the Bohemian Paris of the 19th Century According to George Du Maurier”
The influences of “bohemianism” and hypnosis on Trilby are first presented in their historical context in the 1850’s (postromanticism and mesmerism), then these two themes are analyzed in the Christmas scene. The narrative tensions are suspended during the passage describing Christmas Eve. The irony makes it possible to tackle the unfortunate questions of politics and religion between France and Great Britain: Christianity and Judaism (and regarding the present case anti-Semitism).
Keywords: Bohemian, Romantism, spiritism, Judaism, antisemitism, Christmas Eve, consumerism, opera.
Isabelle-Rachel Casta, « Le Noël juif de Monsieur Samsa. Une double aporie ? »
Isabelle-Rachel Casta, “Mr. Samsa’s Jewish Christmas. A Double Aporia?”
When, in The Metamorphosis, Kafka makes Christmas a form of absent celebration, desired but then totally silenced, he insists on the empty symbolism of this Christian commemoration, while denying the Samsa family any Jewish particularism. Zionist, he was it, claimed it; but it is the sign of the Cross that Gregor’s parents make in front of his remains, and it is the hope of a beautiful present for his sister that illuminates an absurd Christmas that fiction will postpone, eternally.
Keywords: Judaism, antisemitism, Christianity, religion, irony.
New Media for New Characters”
At the end of the 19th century, several magazines placed themselves under the authority of religious figures in the same way as their predecessors, during the Enlightenment, did with Mentor. Saint Nicolas, inspired by the American St. Nicholas: Scribner’s Illustrated Magazine for Girls and Boys, is still discretly religious. The militant purpose of Le Noël is very different. There, Christmas is not represented as a time of abundance. It values the austerity of the origins of christianity.
Keywords: publishing, press, interactivity, generosity, modernity, legend, piety.
Christian Chelebourg, “Christmas Issues in French Weekly Comics. Le Journal de Mickey, Spirou, Tintin, Pilote and Pif Gadget (1934-2021)”
Spirou or Tintin give pride of place to the religion in their “Christmas Special” issues. On the cover, they go to the point of inscribing the comic book heroes in real pious images. Le Journal de Mickey gives the spotlight to Santa Claus. Pilote puts more 314emphasis on presents and agapes. At the end of the 70’s, Santa Claus is the emblem of artifice. Today, the Nativity leaves room for ecologist and feminist causes. For Le Journal de Mickey, it’s also the big screen pop party.
Keywords: comics, publishing, press, youth culture, cultural history.
Danièle Henky, « Les Rois Mages de Michel Tournier. Un conte de Noël merveilleux ? »
Danièle Henky, “Michael Tournier’s The Four Wise Men for Grown-Up and for Kids. A Christmas Fairy Tale?”
The history of the Magi has inspired many creators in the field of the arts. The writer Michael Tournier, nourished at the same time by his reading of the Bible and by Western and Eastern myths and legends, has conceived a narrative inspired by it. We shall try to analyze this updated version for young people, we shall ask in particular if the writer ’ s goal is limited exclusively to the imagination of a wonderful Christmas tale for a child audience.
Keywords: fairy-tale, rewriting, biblical myth, initiation story, sacred art, Michael Tournier.
Marie-Hélène Routisseau, “Three Christmas Motifs. Poetics and Deconstruction of a Part of Western Imaginary”
Considering that Father Christmas is first and foremost part of a folkloric and fun image, it is not surprising that its tradition should gain momentum as the importance of the sacred wanes and the industrialization of cultural products makes it long-lasting. In that respect, the snow, miraculous on account of its metaphysical dimension and its merry plasticity, reenacts the power of a meditative, enchanted image. The magic of Christmas finally comes from the development of human relations.
Keywords: Santa Claus, snow, imaginary, magic, belief, incredulity, rituality, love, miracle.
Christian Chelebourg, “Family Scrooge. Socialised Meaning of a Ritual Fiction”
The seasonal rewriting and programming of Dickens ’ Christmas Carol works like a cultural rite meant to reassure the audience on societal issues. Since Scrooged (1988), the socialization of the tale indicates a crisis of confidence in the father figure. Pop culture shows a youth threatened at times with having to fulfill the dreams of its elders, at other times to see its own ignored. To the individualism of baby boomers, it responds with a need for individualization of behaviours and values.
Keywords: Dickens, adaptation, rituality, youth culture, television, cultural heritage.
316Henri Larski, « It’s a Wonderful Life de Frank Capra.
Henri Larski, “Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life. A Masterpiece of Tenderness and Humanism”
Watching It’s a Wonderful Life has become a family habit in the USA. The film’s effect is based on a contrast between the pessimistic portrayal of the life in a small american town and the supernatural ending. A True digest of Capra’s films, It’s a Wonderdul Life is a bulwark against resignation and defeatism. The director points out that the very function of cinema is to allow the spectator to regain confidence in life when he leaves the movie theater or turns his television off.
Keywords: romance, religion, rituality, Hollywood, television, cultural heritage.
Thierry Jandrok, “Christmas Romantic Comedies. A Dogmatic Conception of Love in North-American Culturel”
Romantic comedies taking during the Holiday Season are a cinematographic subgenre on their own. Through the stories it shows, these comedies often imagine the 317 same pathways. Every movie repeats the same ritual of loneliness, mutual discovery, conflict and love ever after. As such they are revealing of the religious dogmas in the North-American culture. Through a few examples we will interpret the entanglement of religion, money, show business and happiness under the faithful watch of a trusting God.
Keywords: movie, television, comedy, rituality, romance, religion, show business.
Laurianne Perzo, “Christmas in the Theatre. An Indicator to Apprehend the Status of Dramatic Répertoire”
Christmas is a rare topic in children ’ s dramatic productions. By comparing these productions to the Christmas plays of the general repertoire, the singularity of children ’ s theater emerges. If some productions, neither miserabilist nor simplifying, are able to reclaim Christmas, it is to offer an uncompromising look at the contemporary world. The choice of the public involves various processes and strategies when these productions renounce the « aesthetic of despair » (Philippe Meirieu).
Keywords: youth theatre, dramatic repertoire, disabilitiy, war, despair.
Antonio DominguezLeiva, “Where Do Psycho Santas Come From?”
Santa Claus killers are now legion, from comics to movies, TV series, songs, video games and memes. How could we have come to this total reversal of the jovial symbolism of this chubby old elf who covers us with gifts? And how has this somewhat improbable figure managed to impose itself in the various corners of pop culture? This is what we will try to solve in this investigation in the land of “Psycho Santas”.
Keywords: gothic, slasher, Santa Claus, comics, psychopaths, horror movie.
A Twisted Christmas Fairy Tale”
Because of Gremlins is both a Christmas tale and a splatstick, this article aims to show how and why Joe Dante achieved the synthesis of two seemingly contradictory aesthetics: the Corman’s manner on the one hand, the Spielberg’s approach on the other. Midway between New Hollywood’s protest cinema and the 80s merchandising, Gremlins is not just a monster movie about the holiday season. It is also a movie about the power of movie consumption and more about the power of movie creation.
Keywords: horror movie, gothic, comedy, New Hollywood, youth culture.
Gilles Menegaldo, “The Strange Case of Tim Burton’s Christmas”
After having briefly evoked the beginnings of Tim Burton ’ s career with Disney and the context in which the film was made, this article analyses Christmas ’ various modes of representation seen through the medium of the hero Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloweenland. It then examines Jack ’ s journey, between hubris, nemesis and redemption, before giving an account of the film ’ s critical reception in France.
Keywords: Halloween, gothic, romance, comedy, animation, Disney.
Sébastien Bertrand, “Weird Christmas at Gotham City. Deconstruction and Reconstruction in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns”
Tim Burton chose to situate the action of Batman Returns (1992) during the Christmas season, in the gigantic fictional metropolis of Gotham City. Throughout a film marked by duality and ambiguity, the director works to deconstruct and even destroy the conventional image of Christmas in order to better recreate symbols, a spirit and even a magic of Christmas according to his own narrative and aesthetic criteria. It is therefore a profoundly nonconformist vision, but not a hopeless one.
Keywords: superhero, comics, blockbuster, expressionnism, Warner Bros.
Jessica Ragazzini, “The Chronicles of Narnia or No One Can Ban Santa”
The adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by Disney is driven by the religious undertones of Lewis’ novel. But the film also illustrates a fascination for the world of childhood and the quest for innocence lost. The screenplay revolves around the question of banning Christmas. It rules the whole first part of the movie during the development of the characters, then allows their victory. It is the very heart of a film that values the power of hope and imagination.
Keywords: Santa Claus, winter, fantasy, Disney, religion, adaptation.
Comment célèbre-t-on Noël à Oz ?
Mots-clés : Noël, récriture, magie, fantasy, existentialisme.
Caroline Klensch, “Lurlinemas in Gregory Maguire’s Wicked or Christmas in the Land of Oz”
Did you know that in the beginning, Santa Claus used to live in the land of Oz, invented by Lyman Frank Baum? The enchanted realm shelters, next to the famous Wizard, the star of the series, a large number of illustrious characters who are, however, unfortunately often forgotten nowadays. We thus dig the mythology of the country of 321 Oz, in search of Santa Claus and of the spirit of Christmas, embodied in the shape of Lurlinemas. How do we celebrate Christmas in Oz?
Keywords: Christmas, rewriting, magic, fantasy, existentialism.
Maxime Lemonnier, “Christmas Magic in the Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games”
Massively multiplayer online games (MMORPG) offer players real complex fictional worlds with their geographies, peoples, stories or folklore. In this article, we study why and how Christmas is transposed into this type of games. We point out that the stereotypes of the holiday season are used to promote the immersion of players, but also to deconstruct and criticize a Western tradition.
Keywords: video game, interactivity, cyberpunk, folklore, science-fiction.
