Abstract: The career of the photographer Félix Thiollier (1842-1914) was marked by a dual concern for art and archaeology. In his editorial work alongside learned societies, he endeavoured to give an objective account of discoveries, while following a picturesque tradition. Throughout his career, however, art and science complemented each other, often confronting their dynamics and sometimes coming together to allow the expression of another, religious, purpose.
