Abstract: The way contemporary novelists portray tourism attests to an enduring scholarly imagination. It appears in various ways: the author can endorse the posture of the erudite traveller, pastiche the learned phraseology of holiday brochures, allow the fictional tourists make comical use of the scientific discourse, or use it himself to observe the habitus of the traveller, making the tourist a new study object.
