Abstract: A few years apart, on the same South American continent, the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and the draftsman Hercule Florence used drawing to describe their field experience, record phenomena, translate impressions, and communicate information. The efforts of both of them testify to the difficulties of the task, while revealing in the same time the complex links, still relevant today, that unite scientific and artistic views of the world.
