  • Abstract: Debuting in 1874, Le Candidat is the only play by Flaubert to be performed during his lifetime and it was poorly received. This article looks at the play from the perspee Candidactive of the history of show business, considers it in its context, and then examines its composition. Its performances and publication are also considered, as well as critical reception. A play that was perhaps ahead of its time, Le Candidat is finally considered as a part of Flaubert’s body of work.
