Abstract: Reading three novellas which recount episodes of medieval Spanish history reveals the processes used by Dumas to insert historical reality into his narratives. Political intrigues, solemn scenes, the exoticism of court, and the human complexity of great figures of the past all allow him to satisfy the tastes of the public while fulfilling a two-fold didactic aim: the vulgarisation of history and the affirmation of exemplary morals.
