Abstract: Having traced the history of the rapports between theatre and poetry from the classical era onwards, this article defends its hypothesis that a number of major contemporary plays are not “poetic theatre” but rather “theatre-poetry”, to the extent that the emphasis on the utterance of speech goes together with a paradigm shift in the drama.
