Abstract: Far from providing immediate access to reality, documentary theatre reveals the formalising processes induced jointly by the documentation of the world and its theatrical deployment. This is especially the case when the latter articulates the gestures of citing and poeticising. This is how L’Instruction by Peter Weiss proceeds, using the oratorio as a weapon against the legal and mediatised staging of history and its obliterating effects.
