Abstract: This article examines the fundamental question of the dispositio of the Discours, by suggesting that it should be read with recourse to its ending. The end is disappointing, however, leaving the reader, who is ultimately referred by la Boétie to his or her conscience, still thirsting for directives on how to behave with regard to the tyrant.
