Abstract: This contribution is based on the discovery in Madrid archives of various memoirs and reports written in the 1880s and the first half of the following decade by civil servants and observers of varying statuses who suggested resolving the supposed workforce problem in the Philippines colony by importing coolies from different parts of Asia.
