Abstract: Taking patchy archival sources into account, travel literature, which necessitates specific work on the part of the historian, is a particularly useful source of knowledge about Tunisian society of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This article is based on the book that the Protestant missionary Christian Ferdinand Ewald published in 1837 in Nuremberg.
