Abstract: Reflections on money date back to its first appearance, and can be found in the most diverse cultures. However, the sociology of money is yet to find a place within sociological specialisations. Through a definition of the sociology of money as a specific research domain, this essay analyses the contribution that Alexis de Tocqueville made to the birth of this sub-discipline.
