Abstract: So as to better decry the capitalist system and its incitement to individual enrichment in this novel of 1845, Sand makes love of money an element which, far from assuring dynamic progress, prevents any historical evolution. The existential passage of the novel’s protagonists shows that the future is open to those who, without falling into ascetic pauperism, use their wealth to prepare a more equal future. This renders the relationship between Sand and money more complex than it might first appear.
