Abstract: One particular economic notion plays a major role in the novelistic world of Balzac : interest. It serves to justify the actions of the characters. However, another notion adds or opposes itself to interest : self-love, issuing from morality and theology. In this article, Paolo Tortonese interrogates the rapports between interest and self-love as types of motivation evident in Balzac’s characters.
